"What is The Small Munsterlander?"

The Small Munsterlander Gun Dog was developed in Germany centuries ago as a versatile hunting dog that would point game birds, track all kinds of game animals, and fetch anything wounded or killed with a gun. Small Munsterlanders are famous all across Europe for their tenacity in retrieving after the shot whether on land or in water.

In addition to being very competent all-around hunting dogs, the Small Munsterlander was also bred as a companion animal, friendly to all members of the owner's family. This 35 to 55 pound breed is capable of living inthe home or in a kennel close to the house where human attention is regularly available.

Though easy to train, the Small Munsterlander is somewhat slow to mature, but is always eager to please with a mild-mannered and very stable temperament. Both male and females of this breed, however, sometimes have a tendency to assume dominance if allowed, so a clear, firm, and consistent training program is recommended.

As a breed, the Small Munsterlander has no significant history of chronic health problems or genetic disorders. This is due, in large part, to the European breed clubs that have required careful screening and official approval for all dogs in their breeding programs.

The Small Munsterlander has been described as somewhat "setter-like" in body appearance with a "spaniel-type" head. The Small Munsterlander typically has a smooth, soft coat with fringe hair ont he back of the legs and pronounced feathering on the tail. The hair is wavy on the ears and sometimes on the back. Coloration can be off white with liver-brown spots, white with brown ticking, to white with liver-roan spots.

The Small Munsterlander is a very versatile hunting dog that combines a great amount of self-confidence, desire and intelligence with pointing and an ability to retrieve on land or water.
